Airline Industry Updates

Airline Industry Updates: Starting May 28, 2025, Southwest Airlines will implement changes to its baggage policy.

While they long offered their "Baggage Fly Free" option, passengers will now need to pay $35 for their first checked bag and $45 for a second. But don't worry—if you're a Rapid Rewards member, traveling with a Business Select fare, or a holder of the Southwest credit card, you'll still enjoy some special exemptions! Southwest Airlines expects this new policy to generate approximately $1.5 billion annually, but it is also aware that it may alter your perception of flying with them.

On the bright side, the Southwest Airlines team is excited to share that they will soon be introducing assigned seating, extra legroom options, and even red-eye flights!

Turkey Introduces Fines for Premature Aisle Standing

Turkish aviation authorities have implemented fines of up to 2,603 Turkish lira (approximately $67) for passengers who stand up or unbuckle their seatbelts before the aircraft has come to a complete stop. This measure aims to improve safety and order during the deplaning process.

Airlines Face Rising Costs and Supply Chain Challenges

Airlines are grappling with increased operational costs and supply chain constraints, which are creating a delicate balance in the insurance market. While some insurers are pushing for rate increases, competition remains strong due to high capacity levels. These financial pressures may affect future airline strategies and operations.
