Quintana Roo has once again proven its status as a top Mexico travel destination in 2025. From January to May, the state welcomed an average of 928,000 international visitors per month, outpacing the 2024 monthly average of 859,000, according to Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM).
This consistent growth reaffirms Quintana Roo as one of the most visited destinations in Latin America, praised for its:
World-class tourism infrastructure
Award-winning beaches
Cultural heritage and gastronomy
Robust safety protocols
Unmatched hospitality
“These results clearly show that the world wants to visit Quintana Roo,” said Governor Mara Lezama. “We’re working hand-in-hand with global partners to showcase our culture, nature, and people to the world.”
Cozumel and Mahahual: Mexico’s Leading Cruise Ports
Cruise tourism in Riviera Maya is surging. In the first five months of 2025:
Cozumel welcomed 685 cruise ships and over 2.4 million passengers
Mahahual received 302 cruise ships and 1.2 million visitors
These numbers make Quintana Roo the #1 cruise destination in Mexico, outperforming iconic ports such as Los Cabos, Ensenada, and Puerto Vallarta.
How Quintana Roo’s Tourism Strategy Drives Growth
This tourism boom is no coincidence. It’s powered by a comprehensive international marketing and destination management strategy focused on:
Diversifying inbound tourism markets
Strengthening air connectivity with major global hubs
Attending key global tourism fairs and expos
Collaborating with airlines, tour operators, cruise lines, and travel platforms
Main source markets include the United States, Canada, Colombia, Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Brazil, and Argentina. At the same time, the state is intensifying efforts to attract tourists from emerging markets in Asia and the Middle East.
What’s Next for Quintana Roo?
With the summer high season underway, Quintana Roo is positioned to surpass tourism records once again. As Cancún, Riviera Maya, Cozumel, and Tulum continue to draw millions of travelers, the state is expected to remain Mexico’s leading tourism powerhouse throughout 2025.
